Rawalpindi: According to news reports, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi started a cleaning effort in Leh Nullah on Monday ahead of the monsoon season.
It was stated that the cleaning campaign at Leh Nullah will cost around PKR 30 million and will be concluded by June 30. The drive has begun in Gawalmandi, according to WASA Managing Director (MD) Raja Shaukat Mehmood. He stated that difficult places have been identified and that work will begin in two phases.

WASA wants to excavate rubbish under the eight bridges of Leh Nullah in the first phase, then clean construction waste thrown along Leh from I.J. Principal Road to Moti Mahal Bridge in the second phase, according to Mr. Mehmood. He also stated that heavy equipment will be present at the site till the rainy season arrives.
The managing director further stated that the agency spends millions of dollars each year clearing the nullah and that the practice of dumping building materials here should be discontinued. According to the official, the district administration performed a survey and identified eight problematic regions where the most waste was found.
In order to minimize flooding, the commissioner also prohibited the dumping of rubbish in and near the nullah. WASA has also stated its intention to clean 11 large nullahs in Rawalpindi and has requested financial assistance from the district administration to do so. Mr. Mehmood reiterated that the cleansing of nullahs will cost PKR 50 million, citing encroachments in the area as the main roadblock.
