Lahore News: Lahore welcomes the first electric tram imported from China, marking a significant step in modernizing the city’s transportation system. Following the launch of the Orange Line Metro Train and electric buses, the initiative enhances the city’s eco-friendly transit infrastructure.

According to Punjab government officials, a pilot project will test the fully electric tram along Canal Road. The Canal Road pilot project will cover the area between Thokar Niaz Baig and Harbanspura. To determine if a separate lane is necessary, authorities will closely monitor how the tram interacts with existing traffic.
With three compartments, the tram can carry up to 250 passengers and operate efficiently, emitting no emissions. It requires only 10 minutes for the vehicle to travel 25 to 27 kilometers, making it an ideal urban transit vehicle for Lahore.
First Electric Tram Reaches Lahore: Pilot run on Canal Road
Tram assembly and preparations are currently underway at Ali Town Depot. The electric tram is preparing for its inaugural run on the Canal Road. Before rolling out the vehicles citywide, authorities will conduct a pilot phase to assess the vehicles’ performance and commuter response.

According to officials, if the pilot project is successful, other busy routes in Lahore are expected to feature electric trams.
In addition to reducing carbon emissions and urban traffic congestion, the Punjab government is introducing the electric tram as part of its broader effort to promote clean, modern, and reliable public transportation options.
It is anticipated that the new electric tram service will significantly alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution levels in the city. It supports the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s overarching goal of installing an Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system throughout 30 cities in Punjab.
Based on the successful systems in Abu Dhabi, Malaysia and Qatar, this network of trackless electric buses promises a more intelligent, solar-powered transit option for the province.
