Lahore: According to a news published on January 19, the development of downstream man-made wetlands has been submitted by the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) to deal with the challenges faced by River Ravi.
As per sources, the officials have commemorated February 2 as the ‘World Wetland Day’ underway to restore River Ravi Wetland. Furthermore, the authorities have taken the initiative to restore the ecology. It will also become a natural habitat for aquatic life, flora, and fauna while improving the water quality. The RUDA officials divulged in a statement that these wetlands would take part in the initiative to protect swamps, natural ponds, wetlands, and natural water bodies.
According to the sources, the officials from RUDA have mentioned that River Ravi is fronting many climate-related challenges like droughts, deteriorating water quality, and flooding. It also suffers from complications like lack of wastewater treatment, loss of habitat, and contaminated groundwater. The proposed wetlands will rehabilitate the dying river into a perennial freshwater body. It will also develop an eco-friendly, sustainable, and multipurpose Riverfront.
