Islamabad: The National Assembly was told that a comprehensive nutritional PC-I for the whole country entitled ‘Tackling Malnutrition Induced Stunting in Pakistan’ has been drafted.
In response to a query posed by MNA Naureen Farooq Ibrahim, the Minister of Health claimed that the PC-I was developed in line with the National Health Task Force’s advice and recommendations.
The PC-I submitted in November last year was accepted by the Council of Common Interests (CCI), the response claimed, adding according to the National Nutrition Survey 2018 (NNS-2018) estimates of stunting in the provinces as follows: Punjab 36.4 percent, Sindh 45.5 percent, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 40 percent, KP-newly merged districts (NMDs) 48.3 percent, Baluchistan 46.6 percent, Islamabad 32.6 percent, Azad Jammu & Kashmir 39.3, and Gilgit-Baltistan 46.6 percent accordingly.
The study also showed that an estimated 40 percent of children under five are stunted, and nearly 17.7 percent are discarded.
