Lahore News: The Punjab government has postponed the Circular Road evictions until alternative arrangements are made for the traders. The demolition of more than 2,300 shops around the Circular Road is part of the historic revival of the Circular Garden. The restoration is carried through the Lahore Authority for Heritage Revival (LAHR).

The decision comes in response to protests and resistance from traders concerned about displacement without viable alternatives. Over the past few decades, the Circular Garden has been gradually encroached upon, with 2,285 shops built on land. It was initially developed during the British era. 

Previously, these encroachments were regulated through rent collection; however, due to growing urban challenges such as traffic congestion, pollution, and strain on civic infrastructure, the LAHR was created.

Punab Pauses Circular Road Evictions, Plans Underground Markets

The Taxali, Sheranwala, and Mochi gates are three key locations where the government is constructing underground markets to accommodate existing traders as part of a phased redevelopment plan. The sites will include dedicated shop space, parking plazas and essential civic amenities such as water, drainage, electricity and security.

Raza confirmed that no shops will be vacated until the new facilities are complete. The administration had proposed a compensation plan based on one year’s profits, but traders opted instead to relocate.

Bilal Yasin, the Punjab Housing Minister, met with representatives of eighteen trade unions and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to meeting their demands. Under the leadership of Mian Nawaz Sharif, the LAHR’s chair, he promised them that the forthcoming commercial facilities would be built to world standards.

The construction of 2,285 stores and godowns is part of the first stage of the redevelopment. The Department of Communication and Works will carry out the project for the affected traders. Officials emphasize the project to preserve the city’s cultural heritage and protect the daily operations of businesses.
